Fire Safety

Helpful Websites PDF

Also, please have a look at the following American website: http://www.rosebrand.com/home.cfm. It is an excellent source for fire retardants and fire retardant fabrics.

Important Note:

Paramount to the succcess of any trade show are the precautions which exhibitors take to ensure the safety of each person attending the show. Please read and/or print the above document to bring you up to date on fire safety and fire retardant standards.
As the responsible party and event organiser, it is incumbent upon the NSDCC to pay any individual's fines which are levied for non-compliance during the Markets. Given our non-profit status, paying exhibitor fines is not realistic or possible -- the exhibitor would be billed immediately for the fine. The current (individual) fine for not complying with National Fire Safety Standards is $350. In order for the Market to proceed, the Council would have to eject the exhibitor who incurs the fine. If the Council allows said exhibitor to remain at the Market, the whole Market is shut down for non-compliance.
It is imperative that each and every exhibitor who participates in NSDCC Markets complies with fire safety, and that includes having certified fire retardant materials, certified fire extinguisher, complete with proof of having had it re-charged within the previous twelve months.

Light weight wood can be treated with (ed. note: fire-retardant) coloured paint or a clear finish. Most paint stores have a product that is rated; save the label for proof.

There is nothing wrong with using corrugated plastic for a sign, as long as it doesn't make up the majority of your display.

If a fabric store is selling flame retardant material, the store should provide documentation from the supplier. If they can't, then the inspector would have no proof of the fabric having been treated.

Lights should be CSA or ULC rated for indoor or outdoor, based on use. Some may have both ratings; many decorations purchased today do have ratings. Lights must be unplugged when not in use.

Rated extension cords if used, etc.
